Nipsey Hussle, the rapper who earned a Grammy nomination in 2018 for his first major-label release, Victory Lap, was 33 years old when he was shot down in cold blood. The murder took place on March 31, right outside the front of Hussle’s Marathon clothing store on Crenshaw Boulevard in South Los Angeles.
Hussle was reportedly one of three people shot. Hussle died from his wounds at the hospital.
Nipsey’s most recent tweet, sent about an hour prior to the shooting, mentioned the benefits of having “strong enemies.”
While a vigil was being held for Nipsey Hussle and those wounded a man flashed a gun to the well wishers. No gun shots were fired but a melee took place and 19 people were injured. Police were called to the scene and on April 2nd were able to locate the suspect arresting 29-year-old Eric Ronald Holder Jr. for killing Nipsey Hussle, born Ermias Asghedom.
Holder is also accused of wounding two other men in the gun fire.
The formal charges are one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. (Holder was convicted of a felony in 2012, when he pled no contest to possession of a loaded firearm.)
Holder pled not guilty to the charges, and was ordered held on $5 million bail. After a widely publicized manhunt, he was arrested on Tuesday in the city of Bellflower, in Los Angeles County. At a press conference held earlier that day, LAPD chief Michel Moore said that police believe that there was some kind of dispute between the two men. According to video evidence and witness statements, Holder allegedly spoke to the rapper, left and then returned with a gun.
Holder is being represented by Christopher Darden, who became a well-known name as a prosecutor in the O.J. Simpson trial in the mid-1990s.
Hussle was well known for his gang affiliation in the South L.A. neighborhood as well as a member of the Rollin 60s Neighborhood Crips. That changed in recent years where he often downplayed that connection in support of his role as an entertainer and as a businessman, releasing over a dozen mixtapes and albums independently over the course of ten years before signing a joint deal with Atlantic Records in 2017 for the release of his “official” debut album, Victory Lap, which was nominated for a Best Rap Album Grammy earlier this year.
