Stan Lee, born Stanley Martin Lieber, died at the age of 95 today. He was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center early Monday morning and died at the hospital according to Stan’s daughter’s report to TMZ. Cause of death has not been reported just yet. Stan Lee has been fighting off a slew of illnesses recently including pneumonia.
Stan Lee created (in collaboration with many artists) much of the Marvel universe as we know it today. Perhaps he was best know for creating Spider-Man, Marvel’s most successful character, but the list did not stop there. Stan was responsible for the creation of the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Shazam! and so many others!
It’s incredible to think but as of 2017, four of the world’s top 20 all-time box-office hits were based on characters co-created by Lee: The Avengers; Avengers: Age of Ultron; Iron Man 3 and Captain America: Civil War. For all Marvel Fans, if there’s a Marvel movie, we’re all dying to find Stan Lee in one of his famous cameos. In 2018, Lee appeared in Black Panther; Ant-Man and the Wasp; Avengers: Infinity War; and Venom. He will also appear in the untitled Avengers movie which is due out in 2019.
One of the great things about Stan Lee was his humble, “aw shucks, I just write comic books” attitude. He was one of the creative greats that brought decades of joy to so many.
“Excelsior” was Stan Lee’s catch phrase in real life. It’s a Latin word meaning, “ever upward.” So with great sadness, all of us here at CelebTelly want to wish you one last time, “Excelsior!”
